Why did my snake bite me?

My corn snake bit me with no apparent reason. I was holding him and he was being docile, but then he bit my hand with out acting aggressive or giving any warning as if he thought I was food. I washed my hands before holding him, and I wasn't even holding any form of reptile food in the first place. Why did he bite me, and how do I get him to stop?
